Education for Ministry
“Lay persons face the difficult and often subtle task of interpreting the richness of the church’s faith in a complex and confusing world. They need a theological education which supports their faith and also teaches them to express that faith in day-to-day events.”
Education for Ministry (EfM) is such a learning program for adult Christians. It is not necessarily for people interested in becoming a minister, but for people interested in a deeper understanding of theology and how it applies in today's world. All denominations are invited to join EfM for the opportunity to study the Bible, Christian History and modern thought. We learn through study, prayer and reflection and then apply what we learn to today's life.
The four-year curriculum runs from September to May, but you don't need to commit to more than one year at a time. A four- year graduate receives a “diploma” indicating they have completed all four years. Although we used to offer in-person classes, all future EFM course will be online and are available directly from Sewanee.

Our monastic charism, derived from the rule of St. Benedict as well as the contemplative spirit of St. Teresa of Avila, centers on three major principles:

Our monastic charism, derived from the rule of St. Benedict as well as the contemplative spirit of St. Teresa of Avila, centers on three major principles:
- a contemplative ministry of presence rooted in our own Christian contemplative prayer;
- monastic hospitality; and
- an apostolic witness to persons and communities who feel alienated from or outside the usual service commitment or outreach of the Church.
- practice contemplative spirituality through prayer, meditation, and service to others;
- encourage contemplative spirituality by conducting retreats, recollection days, and seminars which are open to individuals of diverse faiths; and
- promote education regarding religious and social issues.
