Volunteer Opportunities
One of the most important values shared by our parish is that of serving our community. Below are some of the groups we sponsor or work with. Volunteer opportunities are available to anyone whether you are part of the church or not. If any of these interest you, please reach out to the contact listed for more information.
Good News Garden
The Good News Garden was started by parishioners to grow and provide food for the Isabella Community Soup Kitchen. Every year, parishioners prepare the grounds for planting seedlings, maintain the upkeep of the garden, and harvest the vegetables when they are ready. Volunteers are always welcome, and no experience is necessary, just gardening gloves, a bottle of water, a hat and yourself. For more information on how to volunteer, please contact the office at [email protected] or 989-773-7448. The garden is done for the year, but we'll be back in spring - 2025 as we are letting the garden renew itself in 2024.
Isabella Community Soup Kitchen
ICSK is a non-profit, community-supported organization that provides free meals to anyone in need. There are no guidelines or qualifications necessary to receive a free meal. More information on ICSK and community support opportunities can be found on their website.
Clean & Bright
This program provides free laundry services to community residents who don't have other access to laundry facilities. The old rectory building houses two washing machines and two dryers. Volunteers are scheduled each time the facilities are being used. If you need the service, you can call Listening Ear at (989) 386-2774 to schedule.
Isabella County Restoration House (ICRH)
ICRH operates a rotating homeless shelter each year from October to April. The shelter rotates between several local churches and St. John's takes two weeks each fall and each spring. Volunteers are always needed, not only at St. John's but at the other churches too. More information on ICRH and the many volunteer opportunities can be found on their website.
People Helping People
Several years ago, parishioner Tim Brockman realized that since the Soup Kitchen was closed on Sundays, the homeless of Isabella County as well as others in need of food had no place to eat. As the owner of Max and Emily's in downtown Mt. Pleasant at the time, he worked with the Soup Kitchen to provide vouchers to those in need who could then redeem the vouchers at Max and Emily's for a free lunch. The restaurant is now under new management, but the program continues.
